We're pleased to be able to update this blog with the news that we now have packaging solution that allows us to despatch smaller orders as parcels under the Royal Mail's new 'Small Parcel' criteria. This has enabled us to reduce our introductory postage & packing level back to £3.50 (the same as it was prior to the Royal Mail price changes) which we feel is much more realistic and much more affordable.
We are continuing to investigate alternative solutions to hopefully allow us to make further similar changes in the near future. In the meantime, many thanks to all our loyal customers for your patience and understanding.
Original Blog - 1st April:
We hope you have been enjoying the Easter weekend & having fun with your dogs, despite the cold weather.
As you may be aware, the Royal Mail is revised its' charging structure for the posting of parcels with effect from tomorrow, Tues 2nd April 2013. Unfortunately not only does this mean that costs are rising, but the current 'Packet' & 'Parcel' classifications are being discontinued and replaced with 'Small Parcel' & 'Medium Parcel' categories which are going to have a significant impact on ourselves, but we believe also on many small businesses across the UK.
We generally don't like to get too political and to concentrate our efforts with our customers & fans on our shared love of dogs, but we feel this is one topic where we need to explain the situation to you all.
Until now, the outgoing 'Packet' category has covered most of the parcels we despatch to our customers; and this was priced by Royal Mail according to the weight of the parcel (within certain size restrictions). From tomorrow however, size of the package becomes the primary deciding factor of the cost band - and there is a maximum depth restriction of only 8cm on the new 'Small Parcel' category. This is too small for any of our packages and therefore means they will all need to be sent as a 'Medium Parcel', which is charged, by Royal Mail for weights of up to 1kg at £5.65 - a more than 100% increase versus the previous £2.70 'Packet' charge for up to 750g which covered orders of up to four bags of treats (nb. our postage & packing charges are slightly higher than the postage charges alone to cover the costs of packaging). You can find out more about these changes on the Royal Mail website.
Unfortunately we have no option, but for the time being to pass on some of these increases to you, our customers in the form of increased postage & packing charges, but we are working hard to find alternative solutions, be they new packaging to fit within the 8cm restriction, or alternative carriers instead of Royal Mail.
We feel that this new charging structure, and in particular the 8cm depth limitation, is far too punitive and is a major concern for small businesses in the UK as a whole and especially mail & internet order businesses which have to charge their customers some or all of the postage costs on top of their goods.
We have written to the CEO of Royal Mail & to our MP to express our concerns and a petition has been set up on the HM Government website with the aim of changing this situation. We would encourage you to read this, and if you agree to sign it and share with your friends and colleagues.
Thanks for reading this rather dry, but important blog and we promise to get back to doggy issues in our next post!
